Mothering Sunday – A day out for Mums, Sons, Daughters and anyone inbetween…
They come in all shapes and sizes, we love them, and they can drive us mad but on this day more than any other we celebrate them all. There are a host of lovely lunches already planned for our Northants Mums, but I ask you, is there a more idyllic setting for a celebration of maternal appreciation than the rolling Northamptonshire countryside and a trip up or down the Welford road?
It’s almost March, and I don’t know about you, but I’m still paying off the excesses of last Chrimbo (I really don’t remember ordering proper Champagne in the restaurant that time, doh). In a bid to counteract me sitting at home and feeling sorry for myself, Muddy contributor Lucy Banwell has curated the best free days out in Northants. No excuse Mudsters, wellies on!
A long walk or cycle around this ancient woodland near Corby is good for the soul, the waistline and the wallet!
Pinch punch first of the month. This week’s What’s On has us running from one side of the county to the other like a March Hare. We’ve got gorgeous gardens, beautiful spring bouquets and should it get a bit nippy out there we’ve got plenty of Northants arts and culture to keep us company. We’ve even got a Northants to London day planned. Goodbye February – Spring has almost sprung. Yippee.
Status Update, Royal & Derngate, Friday/Saturday, 8pm, 24-25 Feb
We know facts.
Didn’t quite make it to skiing this half term? Nope, me neither! But who cares, for we have delights aplenty in Blighty and not just out on our doorstep. Here are some great options if you fancy a day trip out.
Half term week for schools in Warwickshire is 20 – 24 Feb fact fans, so this week is a grand tim for Bucks/Oxon families to head up to Warwick Castle during its relatively quieter week.
Has there ever been a better combination than romance and bored children? This week’s What’s On deals with the paradox of Valentines Day and half term hitting us like a Perfect Storm. Put another way, perfect Mums and Dads, should get, nay DESERVE, a bit of fun time after days of distracting the little ‘uns. Allow us to show you how…
The Soul Weekender, Stanwick Hotel, 10-12th February
Hands up who know’s the roots of Northern Soul?
What? Are those green shoots I spy on the firmament of the Northamptonshire countryside? Well, yes, but let’s not rush into spring shall we? There’s plenty of time for that once we’ve dealt with frosty February, and only the hardiest species (Muddy types) know how to hand the last throes of Winter. And check out two culinary jewels associated with warmer, spicier climates at this time of year. Let’s get on with it…
Snowdrop Days, Evenley Wood Garden, Nr.
Who wants to go on an Eco Retreat, meet some brilliant people and relax with your family – or if you’re really lucky ‘sans’ kids? Me. We’ve been to Lanzarote a few times, which is unusual because I like to try new things and broaden my horizons; but sometimes it’s good to hit the ground running. Is it the winter sun that draws me back? Well ‘yes” but Lanzarote Retreats (loads of varied accommodation), and Finca De Arrieta (Eco Retreat) in particular tick so many more boxes too (right near the beach, total self-catering flexibility, glamping or cottages, good restaurants nearby…).
There’s nothing like a bit of a holiday flirt to cheer you up on a cold, wintery day. If the thought of airport queues, hordes of people and traffic jams on the M5 (anyone else had an overnighter on the motorway, with no loo!) is making you want to unpack your suitcase – take a deep breath, grab a cuppa and read on. Muddy Cambs has pulled together some tip top holiday cottages that all come with waterside locations – better still they’re in the big sky countryside of Cambridgeshire (a mere hop skip and a jump from Northants – come to think of it, Mr Muddy commutes to Peterborough every day).
We’re nearly there, but it’s not too late to let somebody else make your Christmas truly special before we head to the big day itself. Let Northamptonshire’s finest show you a merry, heartfelt christmas.
