6 ways to ace Mothers’ Day

While we shouldn't need a particular date to treat Mum (hey, lady, she gave birth to you!) Mother's Day is always a good excuse to do something extra special. Cue our pick of six local gift ideas to show that you care.

We all know it’s the thought that counts, but not if that thought is a panic-stricken trip to the local supermarket’s petrol station for a wilting bunch of flowers (you know who you are). So, instead of earning yourself a place on the naughty step, get organised and treat the best woman in your life to something lovely this year. Or, if you’re a mum, send these brilliant local gift ideas on to your little darlings to give ’em a nudge.

Relax and pamper

Escape from the treadmill and float into the dreamy bubble of Soo Yoga in Northampton. They’ve got a Mothers’ Day special on Sat 21 Mar, offering an hour of pampering for just £25 including a 25 minute deep cleansing facial, a 30 minute hydrotherm massage and a glass of Prosecco and cake. Upgrade to the £35 option to add a one class pass that can be used within one month towards any fitness, reformer pilates (above) or yoga class at the studio. Plus they have a sauna available to use whenever you’re at the studio as well as a crèche.

Say it with plants

Martin and Cox

Flowers are gorge, but it’s never long before they’ve wilted and need chucking out, so try sending a gorgeous potted house plant from Martin and Cox for a gift that will stay looking perky for ages (as long as you give it a little drink now and again and talk to it – what, that’s normal isn’t it? They’ve got 20% off pots until March 20th and offer next day delivery. Not that you’re going to leave it to the last minute.

The way to a mums heart…

Burnt Lemon Pop Up

The creative team behind Burnt Lemon Chefs are bringing their gourmet talents to the Victorian splendour of Cheyne Walk Club in Northampton for a special Mothers’ Day lunch club pop up. There’s plenty of choice on the menu, including seared cod loin with caponata and chorizo gnocchi and chocoholic cherry mess, and you don’t have to be a member to book. Great company, stunning, on-trend maximalist surroundings and top notch scran. We’re in.

Empowering theatre

How about bonding with your Ma over some right on feminist theatre? To mark Women’s History Month, WANTED on Wed 25 Mar at the Castle Theatre in Wellingborough, boasts an all female creative team and explores the stories of 5 extraordinary ordinary women who share a passion for challenging norms and standing up for their rights. Bring it.

Get crafty

Fancy spending some time together playing with pretty flowers and eating homemade cakes? Jacqueline Rappaport of Hagstone Pottery and Culworth-based grower and florist, Suzy Cubitt-O’Neil, of From Garden to Vase, have collaborated to bring you this creative workshop at Forge Coffee in Culworth. Jacks has designed and made the ceramic bowls and Suzy will show you how to fill them with a pretty arrangement of organic spring flowers to take home.

Milton Keynes’ centre:mk is going all out for Mother’s Day and is your one stop shop for spoiling Mum rotten with loads of deals and events popping up across the shopping centre. First, we’ll be making a beeline for the John Lewis Beauty Retreat which is running tailored 50 minute ESPA Inner Beauty Facials. Basically it’s lying down for the best part of an hour, with no one bugging you to do something. Sounds like the greatest gift you can give a mother, right? Book into to Café Rouge for a free bottle of Prosecco (oh, hello!) on 22 Mar, or if you’ve got a hankering for Italian, Carluccios has a special three course menu with fizz running across the weekend (21 – 22 Mar).
