Corby Cube always hits the spot
It’s been a while since Muddy ventured out to Corby Cube, but a recent visit was a welcome reminder of what a brilliant night out you can have! Muddy’s Rachel Rose braved a trip out with the kids (and a hangover), but loved every minute!
When the call came through to the Muddy Team to review Tiddler and Other Terrific Tales I have to be honest my hand shot up so fast it nearly detached from my wrist. Do I want tickets?? Um yeah! Do I happen to have toddlers??? Why yes I do! (boys aged 2+4, thanks for asking!). Is the whole family HUMONGOUS massive fans of Julia Donaldson + Axel Scheffler’s amazing books??? Well it just so happens, 100% YES again. If you could find me a family who have pre-school aged children who do not have at least one of these amazingly written and awesomely illustrated books you could knock me down with a feather.
So off we trotted this afternoon to collect our Mini Muddy’s, admittedly we were rather the worse for wear having been at a gig the night before in Nottingham (we forget we are now old, and no longer can drink!). We parked conveniently (and very reasonably priced I might add) just moments away from The Core for little legs to walk.
We were greeted by the rather lovely Show Manager who told us that craft activities were waiting for us downstairs. Awesome! The boys LOVED making fishes and decorating them and it kept them entertained perfectly pre-show.
We grabbed our booster seat for the smallest Mini Muddy and headed to our seats. Then the show began…and let me tell you I have been to A LOT OF shows and musicals, and this wonderful piece of theatre blew my socks off. Hands down one of the most ingeniously put together pieces of musical theatre, well, ever! The auditorium of children and accompanying adults were captivated from start to finish.
The three stars of the show sang, danced, puppeteered and charmed the pants off of every man, women and child in the place. The boys loved it and so did we, I couldn’t tell who was laughing more the big people or the little ones! The pace was kept swift and engaging and was perfect for keeping the little ones attention, and no pesky interval for this age range.
The colour, the humour, the songs, the absolutely ingenious and imaginative way they had brought to life the stories and characters from the Tiddler, Monkey Puzzle, The Smartest Giant in Town and a Squash and a Squeeze was a hoot.
If your kiddies love the theatre, Corby Cube really do put on some good productions and there’s loads of parking and eateries nearby. Or if your tots have never been to the theatre but you have been thinking of taking them, it’s a great first theatre experience. Take snacks, take drinks or purchase them from the excellent selection The Cube has for sale. It doesn’t matter if they talk through it, don’t stay in their seat or need a loo break. It is all part and parcel of a show for children and gives the atmosphere a great family vibe.
The Muddy parents concluded 5/5 stars and the eldest Mini Muddy gave it a double thumbs up (there is no higher accolade from him!). A massive pat on the back to Freckle Productions, they have created pure magic with this show and the performers absolutely nailed it (it’s still touring in the UK so check it out).
