It’s a shoe thing: Northampton Museum and Art Gallery to re-open 20 June
Stilettos at the ready! At last, Northampton Museum and Art Gallery have confirmed a date for their hotly anticipated re-opening following a $6.7 redevelopment project that has taken five years to complete. The museum has doubled in size and includes an impressive 9m high atrium linking the original museum on Guildhall Road to the Old Gaol Block.
Muddy devotees and shoe-gazers everywhere will be falling over their Ferragamos to get to the newly spruced up Shoe Gallery, housing our county town’s treasured and internationally renowned shoe collection. The Shoe Museum has always been one of our absolute fave Northampton treasures, so we can’t wait to get back in there and see all those amazing shoes once again, it’s better than Carrie Bradshaw’s closet.
There’s also a temporary exhibition space, as well as a History Gallery, which will have a strong emphasis on local history, including the Northamptonshire lacemaking tradition and post-war development.
The first major exhibition at the museum, to coincide with the grand opening, will be titled We Are Northampton and will celebrate the town’s unique character, iconic buildings and spaces, and it’s diverse and, yes, somewhat idiosyncratic people.
The museum will also play host to regular workshops and events for both kids and adults. Oh! And did we mention there’s a lush new cafe serving fresh, local produce? We reckon the return of our museum is going to be a valuable addition to Shoe Town’s burgeoning Cultural Quarter and wish them all the best with the big launch.
