Back to school…at Whittlebury Park
Summer holidays are almost over so now it’s your turn to unwind and relax. Here's the lowdown on the spa package to get you back on track!
Don’t worry ladies (and gents), the six-week holidays are almost over and it’s now time to think of you after the busy time you’ve had (with kids or without; September still feels like it calls for a regenerative new start). Whittlebury Park is the go-to destination for those who like pampering and unwinding but with a smattering of fun! It’s one of the biggest spas in the country and is the place to go for those who like their spa experience to be a bit more boisterous and bubbly (and yes, that includes the Prosecco kind too)!
Set in the Northamptonshire countryside near Towcester, you feel like you’re a million miles away as soon as the car pulls up on the long drive way. The hotel and spa look a little corporate, but the fact they’re nestled away in nature and trees makes all the difference.
On the day we visited, the car park was full; and this is testament to the widespread appeal of Whittlebury! They always have really good, affordable deals running which means most people can afford a trip here and can tailor it according to budget. Their Back to School Recharge Day for Two is just one of the packages that suits most budgets, AND you get lunch! Even if you don’t have little ones and back to school means nothing more than congested traffic again, that in itself is a good excuse, non? The spa is sizeable with lots of good facilities that are all included in the package. From Heat and Ice experiences to steam rooms and a 19-metre swimming pool there is loads to try out (when we were leaving I asked Mudlet if she wanted to go on anything else – almost like we were at a theme park).
Most packages come with a free treatment and with this package you get the choice of facial or a foot & scalp massage, each 25 minutes.
There’s quite the variety of facials to choose from including ESPA and ELEMIS facials. We plumped for ESPA and both loved it! This brand works with biochemists, skin experts and aromatherapists to combine traditional holistic therapies with the purest natural ingredients. They also offer ELEMIS for those who prefer the more scientific approach. My lovely therapist Helen says ESPA is the more holistic facial, but she prefers Elemis, so it really is a very subjective thing. It was an express facial but there was no skimping on steps or products and we all had a lovely glow afterwards (the facials involve deep cleansing and relaxing aromatherapy which purify, refines and hydrates the skin, leaving you with visibly resilient, healthy-looking, youthful skin – ok, that’s what the blurb said but we all really did glow afterwards)!
Using ESPA and ELEMIS products really does give these facials a luxurious edge (only the best for you Mudsters ey!) and they’re suitable for all skin types. On top of the treatment rooms there’s also an onsite salon, so whether it’s a manicure or a whole new hairstyle, you can get it done all under one roof.
I’ve heard lots of good things about the Whittlebury Park therapists but also cynicism that it must be difficult to maintain quality in an operation this big…Going on what I’ve heard and my own experiences (in terms of therapists), I’ve always had a positive experience with treatments; BUT, in terms of the scale of the operation at Whittlebury I’d advise a couple of Muddy hacks before you go!
Between 9am and 10.30 am in the morning it’s going to be heaving! Even if you don’t have a treatment, just the spa day check in is going to be full on (Mondays and Fridays are super busy; Wednesdays not so much)! If you can get afternoon treatments I’d definitely suggest booking in later; after 11am if you can. You can stay at the spa until the evening and you’ll miss the rush on check in and the rush on the first lunch sitting, this one is always going to be busy and can result in you waiting for food to be refilled – which moves us nicely on to the business of eating and drinking.
Whittlebury has a variety of places to eat and drink, and included in most spa packages is a 2-course buffet lunch filled with loads of healthy options. The food is tasty and fresh, but it can get very busy. Be prepared to wait a few minutes in a queue; or as we mentioned above; avoid the first sitting! If you’re staying on til later and fancy dining in luxury book in at Murrays restaurant which is a real fine dining experience (watch this space for our iminent visit). And before heading back to your room enjoy a drink in the Silverstone Bar where the walls are plastered with unique motor racing memorabilia. From gins to wines, soft drinks to cocktails see yourself off with a glass of something from the v generous menu (we’ve had a couple of post dinner digestives there in the past)!
Many packages offer a night’s stay and sometimes there’s even entertainment (more of which on our next visit); so it’s great for special occasions and weekends away!
The Back To School spa package, like many of Whittlebury’s offers is a superb value for money deal (see below); but do your homework before you go. If you don’t like crowds or prefer your spa experience bijoux and hushed, this may not be the spa option for you! When I’ve visited, there’s always been groups of girls having fun and a glass of bubbly or two at lunch; and living in Northamptonshire, I know Whittlebury is the preferred choice for a lot of people, many of whom are returning guests, time and time again! Let us know if it’s your thang, we love to hear from readers!
In the meantime check out all of their value for money packages here and be sure to keep an eye on their social media to find out about the latest deals and happenings. And if you didn’t manage to get away over summer, no sweat, here’s the dealio…
