6 of the best places to drink when you’re not drinking
Whether you're still plugging away at dry Jan or pulled the designated driver short straw, here's our pick of some of the best hangouts in Northants for a booze-free tipple.
Mocktail madam? Polish that halo and give yourself a big pat on the back if you’ve made it this far in to dreary January on the wagon. Slipped off? Me too, but we can still be virtuous thanks to the booze-free drinks on the menu at these cool Northants hangouts.
Pohutukawa, Long Buckby
Pohutukawa have re-styled their Friday and Saturday night tapas and cocktail nights as Tex-Mex small plates, keeping the gorgeously creative cocktails from the top level mixologists at Muddled Lime, of course. And the best thing? You can ask for any of the cocktails on the menu in virgin form and they’ll often use the brilliant alcohol-free botanical blends from Northants-based Xachoh too. Tex-Mex kicks off on 21 Jan.
Watling St Village, Towcester
Family-friendly and super funky, Watling Street Village is geared up to keeping everyone happy from the kids to the ultra-virtuous like us (ahem). So it goes without saying that the mocktail menu has plenty of fruity options as well the classic Virgin Mary, which is practically a health drink in our book.
The Smoke Pit, Northampton
One of the coolest hangouts in town, bedecked in graffiti and bursting at the seams with insanely loaded burgers, hot dogs, nachos and ribs and with a cocktail list as long as your arm, you’d be forgiven for thinking this may not be the place to hang out if you’re trying to go a bit healthy and ditch the booze, but hey, what’s this on the menu? A superfood salad. And there are some pretty tasty mocktails on offer too. Make mine a Watermelooooooon. Say what? That’s watermelon syrup, cranberry juice and lime.
Tap and Kitchen, Oundle
This semi-industrial waterside joint at Oundle Wharf ticks all of our boxes, it’s perfect for date nights, Sunday roasts with the family (epic Yorkshires ahoy) and girly gatherings, but you’ll almost inevitably be driving to get there, so nab yourself a Curious Melon, Cranberry Cooler, Peach Island Iced Tea or a Passion Fruit Martini and you’ll be fresh as a daisy the morning after. I mean, fruit is healthy, right?
Casa de Tapas, Towcester
After their big re-brand in 2021, Casa de Tapas seem to be going from strength to strength and their alcohol free cocktails are some of the best we’ve tried, with the menu even showing which are vegan-friendly and gluten free. And, if you can’t decide between the Virgin Cinnamon Martini and the Virgin Pornstar Martini, you can have one of each, guilt free. I’ll drink to that.
Corkers Champagne and Cocktail Lounge, Northampton
Next to the ever-popular Mem-Saab Indian restaurant, Corkers is perfect for pre-dinner drinks and the alcohol-free options are a real treat, with sweet or bitter fruity blends and a creamy Virgin Pina Colada on the menu. The alcoholic cocktails are pretty good too, but shhh, we’ll save those for another day…right?
