I spy with my little eye something beginning with bargain

I LOVE a bit of vintage shopping, simply because there are bargains and glamour to be uncovered, none of it available on the high street, and in this case, it’s a great opportunity to support local Northants businesses – giving it a go!!  So if you’re in a vintage state of mind why not pay a visit and check out Antiques/Collectables/Vinyl Records/Vintage Clothing and loads more, all at January prices. Afterwards, you have over 120 dealers to browse through, and of course there’s always The Vintage Retreat Tea room to whet your whistle. £1 entry, children go free.

And Ryan dances as well? Swoon

Did you know that World class artists and actors have been (and continue to be) regular visitors to Northampton for over 125 years, but perhaps the most famous of all is Tasmanian born Errol Flynn, who spent 6 months as a member of the acting company of Northampton Rep (now known as Royal & Derngate), before heading to Hollywood where he made his name and fortune. Well that was a short history on why it is The Errol Flynn filmhouse, but did you know that the most comfortable Cinema in Northamptonshire has an array of mainstream and er, not so mainstream movies showing on most days – it’s a real gem.  This Sunday we see the arrival of Ryan Gosling (be still my beating heart) in La La Land.  The movie is an original musical written and directed by Academy Award-nominee Damien Chazelle (Whiplash), telling the story of Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring actress, and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. And you can watch all of this unfold in a very comfy seat with a glass of wine in hand. Lovely.

Tickets £6.50 – £8

We forecast bright but chilly afternoons in the next week or so

Arise Sir Ray. The life’s work of recently knighted Ray Davies is celebrated and showcased in this Olivier award winning musical – Sunny Afternoon – which tells the captivating tale of how one of Britain’s greatest bands, The Kinks, rose to stardom. Step into swinging ’60s Britain and discover how The Kinks found their definitive sound that rocked a nation and influenced generations. Featuring the iconic hits You Really Got Me, Waterloo Sunset, Dedicated Follower Of Fashion, All Day And All Of The Night, Sunny Afternoon and more, this production fizzes with energy, and is a fresh new “Great British Musical” (The Times) that will make your spirits soar. I’m so excited I’m going on my Birthday!

Hale Training Camp, Kettering, 10 January

WARNING. Might hurt

We remember that lovely Chap, Adam Hale, winner of the Muddy Award 2016 for Best Fitness Instructor. Well that was before New Year, New You. No more Mr Nice Hales, as Adam puts Northamptonshire through it’s paces in a rigorous and focused schedule of training to help reduce body fat, amongst lots of other benefits. The six week courses start on on January 10th with limited spaces, and involve 3 classes a week.  Yikes – but it will definitely be worth it. Each space on the course costs £150. HALE TRAINING CLUB is Kettering’s newest functional training facility. The club is a unique and well-equipped fitness facility with a focus on fun (errrrr) and functional training to get the very best results.

Book early to avoid the crowds…

…meanwhile in the other corner… As far as tasty food goes, Mr Muddy and I decided our first foray in 2017 would be to this wonderful establishment, recently nominated for Chef of the year at the recent 2016/2017 Carlsberg Northamptonshire Food and Drink awards. It didn’t disappoint, and we were especially impressed at the brilliant value for high quality bistro food. And lo and behold – there’s a great voucher available on their Facebook page – terms and conditions noted. *One Voucher per table, when two or more Guests order two courses each from the Bistro menu.  The Voucher can’t be used in conjunction with any other offer and is only available between Sunday evenings and Thursday evenings until 9 February 2017.

The Nature Tots sessions feature across all Northamptonshire parks, where you can go on a nature walk with a Ranger exploring a different theme each month, followed by a craft activity.
