5 reasons to buy a Tusting bag (or accessory)

Not heard of Lavendon based Tusting? You have now, and you'll thank us for it!

Home grown talent (and we mean home grown near Olney) makes up Tusting, a company that hand crafts the finest bags, luxury leather luggage, briefcases and accessories. In a world where there are myriad companies offering luxury leather bags, Tusting genuinely sticks out.

They make their bags in-house, in their own factory in Lavendon (ticking a great provenance box right there) and are super passionate about the leather they use – all those generations of knowledge have left them with a general horror of “corrected” or plastic-coated leather, which they say is sadly now the norm in most high streets and even many luxury bag brands.

The Tusting story began way back in 1875 when the great-great-grandfather of the current directors founded a leather tannery to supply premium leathers to the new English shoe factories. Tanning leather remained the family’s business until the early 1980s, despite the intervention of the odd family disagreement and a couple of world wars (similar to a family disagreement in my house). Accumulated expert tanning skills passed down through the generations allowed survival of the recession, which closed the majority of British tanneries, by redeploying the knowledge in to sourcing and trading leathers from all over the world.

Seeing that even this agility was still no guarantee of future security, the family sought to diversify further. Combining their widely-respected knowledge of leather with Britain’s global reputation for top notch saddlery and shoemaking skills (especially in Northamptonshire), and access to a rich local supply of leatherworking expertise, premium leather luggage began to carry the Tusting name. It remains wholly-owned by the family to this day, with the fifth generation now in charge.

Have you seen these bad boy bags, who wouldn’t want one? And on top of the quality, customers know they’re getting integrity and service. Gillian Tusting, Director of Marketing says: ‘Our type of luxury is not about opulence, excess or great expense. It’s the kind of luxury you feel by obtaining something precious which is rarely found. Something genuine and original, which turns out to be even better under the surface. We believe, simply, that a leather bag should be made from beautiful, full-grain, unadulterated, leather.’

I’ll have the blue one please

Artisanal craftsmanship is invested in every stitch to ensure bags with quality and personality! Speaking of personality, they recently introduced a specialised service where customers can leave a handwritten note, embossed in the leather of a bag as the ultimate in personalisation (we likey). These bags are made to last and if they ever do need to be repaired, Tusting are ready to do whatever is possible, no matter how old (the bag, not you).

So who is the Tusting customer? They vary from young adults making their first serious bag purchase, or receiving a lovely 18th or graduation present, right through to older customers who have discovered that buying quality is always better than quantity.

Less fussed by fashion than by true English style, owners are often quintessentially British themselves (and include former Dr Who, Matt Smith, and members of the royal family). Tusting also have a keen following in countries where British style is coveted –  Japan and the USA in particular, and noticeably more so now in Europe…(is that a Brexit phenomenon perhaps?).

Boasty bits

They may not be so widely known with the British consumer, but the paper cuttings show they are acknowledged in the industry as being one of the finest manufacturers of leather goods in the country. They have long standing partnerships with Aston Martin and Church Shoes and were selected by Marks and Spencer for their global ‘Best of British’ project which saw them collaborate with the UK’s finest clothing and accessories manufacturers. Basically, these guys are good! Feel like we might have been a bit generous on bigging them up? Well don’t take our word for it…

‘As I travel quite frequently, I’ve seen many duffel-style bags, and honestly, I have yet to see a bag more handsome than this one. I have received more than a few compliments, the most recent being from a TSA agent who described it as the “best bag he’s seen” and I’m sure he’s seen thousands. I’m a customer for life!’

‘It is so well made. All the seams are perfectly set and the leather is the highest quality. It will need some time to acquire a lovely patina but this tough leather is the guarantee that the bag will last a lifetime! I waited 4 years and had different leather weekenders in the meantime but this is the top of the top – the one to rule them all.’
