Our festive fashion top 10

Invitations piling up and nothing to wear? Well, Cinders, you shall go to the ball (or, er, pub). Muddy's partywear edit incoming!

Never let us forget the true meaning of Christmas – a month-long opportunity to get leathered on mulled wine and wear spangles. A lot of spangles. Yippee! So if you’re staring down the barrel of 8,000 imminent festive bashes and wondering what the heck to wear, you should read this immediately. Muddy’s Kerry Potter knows her fashion – and also knows her parties, the old lush – so she’s scoured the shops on your behalf for her 10 best party picks. Let’s go, ravers!

THE JUMPSUIT

My friend wore this sequinned slice of sexiness for her 40th birthday bash at the weekend and looked incredible – it’s sparkly without being OTT, a supremely flattering cut and, being a jumpsuit, is a smidgen edgier than a dress. There’s plenty more where that came from at Warehouse this season, by the way.

£84

THE EARRINGS

I’d never normally wear pearls (maybe one day when I’m a proper grown-up) but these unusual earrings are top of my Christmas list. I love them because (a) they’re minimal rather than mega festive yet still make a statement and (b) the edginess of the gold-plated hoops makes the freshwater pearls feel less demure. Clever work from cult Hollywood accessories designer, Chan Luu.

THE BAG

Little-known local by-law: if you’re carrying this rainbow glitter stripe bag, it is mandatory to have a brilliant night out. I mean, how couldn’t you – it’s so ridiculously cheering. Plus, it’ll go with anything and it’s cross-body rather than a clutch, leaving you hands-free to grab both a cocktail and a canapé at once. Result!

£29

THE BOOTS

Cold feet – literally – at parties? Don’t feel obliged to wear strappy, drafty shoes – these days a fancy ankle boot will hit the spot. These green suede and gold stud beauties are from Sezane – I’m obsessed with this hot, new très chic Parisian brand (take a look at their gorgeous handbags and jumpers too, you’ll thank me).

£180

THE LBD REDUX

An LBD is a party failsafe but it needs updating from time to time. This version does just that as it comes in the fabric of the season, velvet. Kitri is one of those cool girl, under-the-radar brands so you’re unlikely to bump into anyone else wearing the same frock.

£85

THE VELVET JACKET

I just wore this to the first knees-up of the season and can confirm it’s a hit – I spent the entire evening being enthusiastically stroked by my pals. Not in a weird way, mind, it’s just the bottle-green velvet is supremely tactile. I pushed up the sleeves and wore it with a stack of gold bangles.

£105

THE STILETTOS

Outfit a bit boring? These gold and pink sequinned slingbacks will part-tay it up in an instant. They’re from John Lewis’s own brand, And/Or, which gets better every season – bookmark it pronto. Bonus marks for a heel height that still allows you to walk (or stumble, ahem).

£89

THE DISCO JUMPER

Word to the wise: you really don’t have to shiver in a sleeveless top these days. Voilà, the disco jumper. It’s fine-knit so you’re not sweating by 10pm and comes with a subtle smattering of sequins so there’s no danger of anyone mistaking you for the Christmas tree.

£49

THE STATEMENT SKIRT

‘Tis certainly the season of the statement skirt. This gold pencil one is suitably slinky and well-priced to boot. Throw on a plain black T-shirt or cami’n’blazer up top plus pointy black ankle boots and you’re done.
