New Year dress up – him and hers!
8 Muddy tips to looking the business on December 31
It’s the one time of year that many of us embrace our inner glitter goddess and whether you’re staying in or going out-out, you can glam up regardless. Looking good for New Year’s Eve isn’t always top of our priorities in the Xmas rush (especially whilst juggling work/kids/logistics/shopping/staying alive), but it’s always nice to make a little bit of effort, if only for yourself and how it makes you feel! So if you’re a bit overwhelmed by everything right now, Muddy is here with some suggestions for pulling together a party outfit with minimal fuss (a one-stop shop at Rushden Lakes last year fixed me up for pressies, so I reckoned it would be a winner for party glamour too)!
New Year dress-up 2018 – Muddy’s top picks
- Blazers/jackets (for him and her)
- Skinny jeans (for him and her)
- Sassy heeled courts
- Statement lippy
- Glamorous coat (which looks great over everything)
- Fragrance (smell divine – I never used to bother really, then I was introduced to Tom Ford, Penhaligons and a brand called Le Labo and I’ve been sold ever since)!
Sequins are everywhere at the moment, and everywhere at Rushden Lakes. I plumped for two dresses, telling myself I’ll be taking one back (I won’t). First up was the M&S bodycon for £55, which handily has long sleeves; so is both practical and glam (is it just me who needs to be warm these days?).
And second up is this Regina Sparkle Pleated dress from Whistles! But wait, I know Whistles is a bit of an extravagance pre Xmas, but it was IN THE SALE! I mean, I don’t remember there being many sales before Xmas a few years ago, but at the moment there are absolutely loads! This beaut was drown from £169 to £99 – just team with blazer (more of which further down)!
Not sparkly but uber glam was this Biba number in House of Fraser (I LOVE Biba). It wasn’t my size but is down from £130 to £52, so if you’re a 12 ruuuuuuuun)!
There were sparkly bags galore in House of Fraser, River Island, New Look and Accessorise (below). You’ll be spoiled for choice and can pick them up from a fiver upwards (I loved the flowery beaded one from Accessorise).
If you buy one thing this Xmas, make it a blazer. It dresses up jeans and casual wear and dresses down sparkly/dressy frocks. I loved the warmth of the velvet fabric of this one in River Island (£68). I find they do the dressy top/jacket combo very well and for people who don’t dress up that often, you know you’ll get your wear out of it!
It’s not just for the lady either. Blokes can’t get enough of a jacket/jean combo at the mo.
The one above was just a bit too OTT for Plus One but he plumped for a gorgeous blue one in Moss Bros, which for only £99, I reckon he’ll get excellent cost per wear out of!
He teamed it with a skinny jean from River Island (just £30 – more on skinnies below), and a H&M L.O.G.G. shirt (Label of Graded Goods). He’s got three in different colours, he loves them so much. To be fair, I once told him his guns look good in them and he almost bought the whole range (check them out here, just £17.99 upwards).
Skinnies (and sassy heeled courts)
The skinny jean is nothing new, and there are plenty in every single shop in Rushden Lakes. I find River Island’s skinnies have a good amount of stretch, but if you prefer them a bit more norm jean, House of Fraser and M&S do a decent range (similar with the sassy heeled court, they’re timeless and will dress up skirts and jeans while being the perfect accompaniment to the sparkly or LBD)! If your bloke likes a skinny, again, the River island range is a winner!
The thing I love about a jumpsuit is the ease of it. It’s an outfit all in one and I find you rarely have to iron them! Again, most of the shops at Rushden Lakes stock a jumpsuit, I noticed quite a few one shouldered ones for the season; if that feels a bit chilly, team with aforementioned blazer. Remember though, the jump suit isn’t an easy loo option, so always have that at the back of your mind (I once wore one on a flight! Never again).
Whether it’s scarlet red or deep plum, statement lippies are having a moment! I’m either a nude gloss with smoky eyes or a bright red and bare eye kinda gal, but this year, I’m going out on a limb and going deep plum. Again, there’s loads of makeup in the sale at House of Fraser. I liked the Nars colour pallett, but to be honest, you’ve got a superb pick of brands here. Mudlet is like the proverbial kid in the sweetie shop!
Glamorous coat (lots of faux fur)
Whatever your outfit, if you look the bomb in your coat, you’re halfway there (I’ve been known to keep mine on in sauna like conditions, because when I arrived at the do, I realised my top was way below par)!
Mudlet is after a glam coat and when we go to Rushden Lakes together, we always seem to end up in New Look – and knock me down with a feather – there was another sale on here. If you prefer a bit more upmarket, nip down to Hobbs. I got a lovely coat there last year and they always have a great range too.
I ALWAYS go to House of fraser at Rushden Lakes if I’m looking for fragrance. Neither Tom Ford or Penhaligon’s are cheap, but I find that a spritz or two will last you all day, or in the case of Dec 31st, until the end of the year. Again more sales (it’s quite the embarrassment of riches really), but be careful in this section, because there are so many glorious scents, you’ll be hard pressed to want just the one!
So there we have it dear reader, my quick fix for NYE. It can sometimes be thirsty work so check out all of the watering holes and eateries here (there’s a new Nandos and Five guys too)! My littlest mudlet loves pasta, so we often go to Wildwood, but it seems the oldest Mudlet always manages to get a burger anyway, so win/win (speaking of win, there’s a brill prize on offer; £100 to spend at a store of the winner’s choice and a meal for two at a Rushden Lakes restaurant. Just subscribe to the blog, like the Facebook page (or if you’ve already done these two, share the Facebook post and comment : ) Good luck!
