30 things to do this October half term
Is it that time of year already? October half term is fast approaching (or has landed for some), so if you’re worrying about how you’re going to keep the little monsters out of mischief, then you're in the right place.
The great outdoors:
Rushden Lakes isn’t just perfect for shopping. You and your little ones can explore the lakes finest feathered friends as you spot which birds either by sight or sound. There are three walks available on Sunday 27th October, and all last 60 minutes. The event is free and a fab way to escape into the great outdoors. Make sure you book as there is limited availability and if you book, you get a goodie bag and priority booking for future events.
Over at Brandon Wood and Piles Coppice on Sunday 27th October is their Orienteering day out, where you can run, walk and explore the woods, finding the hidden checkpoints using your map to guide you. There will be a few path and off path cross country trails from easy to more challenging, so whatever your experience and whatever age, there is a course for all ages, 5-85.
There’s lots of pumpkin pickings happening in and around Northamptonshire, Grange Farm, Farndon Fields and Beckets Park are just a few but there are many more over on our Halloween things to do feature.
Family days out:
Just because it isn’t Christmas just yet doesn’t mean you can’t hop on the ice for a skate. Beckworth Emporium are hosting parent and toddler ice skating sessions over several dates and it’s a great place to meet other parents. Get the youngsters (0-5) having a go on the ice with the help of push penguins and props to aid them along.
Did the kids also love Downtown Abbey? If so, Delapre Abbey have a children’s trail where you can snoop around a beautiful Victorian country house with your trail sheet, searching for clues and completing the questions and tasks to win a prize from the Delapre butler or housemaid. Delapre also have their Autumn Fair where you can try out welly wanging and apple bobbing.
Getting your kids to eat healthy is never easy but with the help of this veggie sushi for children workshop, you and your children can explore and experiment creating tasty and colourful sushi dishes using a range of healthy ingredients, all led by Natasha, the Loving Chef from Sol Haven.

Get into the Christmas spirit early too, The Snow Queen is on, also at The Deco and stars Edele Lynch from the throwback Irish girl band, B Witched. The show is on Wednesday 30th October either at 2pm or 7pm. If the kids loved Frozen, they will love this.
If the kids fancied a go at performing themselves, The Deco is also hosting Matilda in 20 minutes, a great chance for children aged 6-17 to take part in a youth drama and dance project in an actual theatre performance. Royal and Derngate are hosting a similar event, their Halloween holiday projects where you can let your kids enjoy creative activities, make new friends and have lots of fun.
