Northampton’s Marigold Hotel!
The Hawthorns offers a retirement like no other! It's pure luxury from cocktail hour to cinema hour and plenty of socials in between.
None of us really wants to think about getting old, but like it or not, we are and we will. And if we’re still quite a way off, our folks may not be, which is why I found myself at The Hawthorns in Upton, a luxury retirement complex the like of which I reckon is completely unique to Northampton, and probably most of the UK. It is a state of the art brand new building with indoor bowling alley, 5 star restaurant, hair salon, spa and loads, loads more. So if retirement living options are on your radar, for whatever reason, this is definitely worth a visit. Here’s 5 reasons to check it out…
Retirement apartments have historically been something you buy and that you’re generally tied into but here you can pretty much head there straight away; and other than the 28 day notice period, there’s no minimum term; so those over 65, can have the break they want. No exit fees either, so there’s no need to worry if they want to hop aboard a cruise for a year or even change their mind about staying. Having visited (but not stayed), I can reiterate that this place is all about fun, lifestyle and changing the face of what retirement looks like. It offers residents an active and independent lifestyle and a friendly retirement community that will definitely add a buzz into people’s lives.
This place will shake off any stereotypes about retirement homes you have. It aims to be a home from home where there’s no hassle of managing a property and with the simple all-inclusive monthly fee, everything is covered, so there’s no worrying needed. Even dining (with wine!) and the daily socials are thrown in. The all-inclusive really does means all-inclusive with no service charges added at any point, it all comes as part of the rent so there shouldn’t be any worries when it comes to juggling bills. Living on an easy budget with no nasty surprises or hidden extras catching you out, really makes this place stand out, and with a 5 star restaurant and cocktail hour thrown in too, they’ve got us wondering when we can sign up. (No really, when can we sign up?).
There’s a wellbeing programme here and the gym and exercise classes will keep everyone fit; there’s tai-chi and loads of other classes available. Keeping fitter and healthier for longer is at the core of Hawthorns and the support & equipment needed is there to make the most of doing just that.
The communal areas are vibrant, fun places to meet with friends and family whether it’s over a drink at the bar or chilling out in the cinema. The landscaped gardens are lovely, there’s a well stocked library, garden club, spa room, clubhouse bar and all-day free café.
The Hawthorns goes above and beyond to create a social calendar. There’s visiting entertainers, talks from the popular local history club, or group trips for a delicious Sunday roast at the local hostelry. Add in the indoor bowling alley, cinema or getting dolled up at the hair salon and like us, you’ll think it sounds more like a cruise too! There is quite literally something to fill every second of the day, from activities within the complex to the minibus service for a day out in Northants.
If you’re green fingered you can really escape here as not only can you have your own patio or balcony to look outside, you can also benefit from the communal gardens and get stuck in, as well as their gardening clubs, potting shed and raised flower beds, so you can be at one with nature and grow your very own veg or whatever else that you can give to the chefs to cook up a treat with.
70 is the new 40! Hawthorns does everything possible to dispel stereotype of what a pensioner looks like or can achieve. Aside from EVERYTHING outlined above, the weekly housekeeping and linen service will take care of the household chores so residents can take control of their retirement and live it to their fullest (three hour lunch anyone?).
Literally everything is done for you; cooking, cleaning, bed linen & towels laundry. This is luxurious but comfortable living, all wrapped up in an atmosphere of fun, friendliness and a sense of fostering every individual need. There’s a lovely selection of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments available and some even include a patio or balcony which overlooks the rolling Northants countryside. They’re contemporary, freshly decorated and finished to an exceptionally high standard throughout and come complete with a kitchenette and walk-in shower room.
So what do you think? You can book a visit if you fancy a nosey round, and a one-month all inclusive trial is from just £65 per day. It may be a trial but it still includes all the perks so it will certainly give a glimpse of what it’s like to spice up any retirement.
