With Northants and England cricketing royalty and foodie extraordinaire Allan Lamb at the helm, Banhoek Chilli Oil is in the hands of an ardent champion. Lamby’s discernment when it comes to good food is almost as legendary as his cover drive (google it – he’s good!), so it’s no real surprise to learn that he’s dipping his toe into the world of posh condiments.

Banhoek Chilli Oil bridges the gap between a must-have kitchen staple and luxury hamper treat, nothing similar we’ve come across comes close to the gorgeous quality and branding. I keep mine out on display in my kitchen because I just love the bottle. They make lovely foodie gifts of course, especially the wrapped bottles.

Produced in South Africa, where Allan grew up before an international cricketing career brought him here to Northamptonshire, Banhoek Chilli Oil is named after the valley where it’s made in the picturesque Cape winelands. It uses a neutral and mild, non-GMO, locally produced rapeseed oil to allow the flavour and intensity of the birdseye chilli infusion to sing through and there are no chillis left in the bottle, as you so often see in shop-bought oils, because filtering them out once infused allows the flavour to stabilise and the gorgeous oil to remain exactly perfect.

Did you know that chillis have loads of health benefits, from an initial endorphin rush to being a great source of vitamins A, B. C and E? Plus the rapeseed oil is cholesterol free and high in omega-3 fatty acids, which can help to prevent heart attacks and strokes, as well as brain-boosting omega-6, which is packed full with vitamin K and E to help prevent sun damage and the effects of ageing. No wonder Allan looks so young, this stuff is good.

It’s not just about the oil, though, the people behind Banhoek are dedicated to boosting local economic empowerment and helping people to find a way out of poverty and into rewarding careers. Supporting local community is at the heart of Banhoek’s ethos, alongside a commitment to environmental sustainability, meaning that when you buy a bottle of Banhoek you can be confident in the quality and provenance of the oil as well as the amazing flavour it’ll add to your dishes, whether drizzled over salads or used to add some spice to your cooking.
