Nestled in historic Sheaf Street, Daventry, Bread & Circus is the wonderfully named artisan bakery that we wish we’d created! Family owned, it focuses on 3 key values – fresh, exceptional and artisan – and we absolutely love it! Not only does it serve up artisan bread of all styles, it also offers exquisite patisseries and delicious savouries that are made from the very finest flours (including flours from France and Italy), plus locally produced ingredients. Some of the creations look like pieces of art, almost too good to eat really (but we did anyway)!
If you fancy sitting in, it’s a beautiful 36-seater space that transforms into a contemporary pizzeria Wednesday to Saturday evenings. Vegetarian sourdough pizzas are a huge fave but they also serve up salads, fine desserts, organic wines, beers and fab cocktails. There’s plenty of vegan options and all are produced on site fresh with lots of love and attention. In fact, the baking credentials are quite superb. Ben, the Head Baker is a graduate of the School of Artisan Food and one of his previous positions was at the famous Skibo Castle. Megan is an award-winning Patisserie Chef trained at Northampton College and there’s Dan and DJ, the eager trainees. So much faith does Bread & Circus have in its people, they are funding a six-month full-time qualification for Dan who goes off to the School of Artisan Food in March (so if you know someone who’d like to fill the trainee spot, just holler)!
Bread & Circus is a little gem committed to using fresh, additive-free recipes that are all made from scratch. Plus their wine list offers organically grown and fair-trade grapes that contain no chemical sprays and nasties (oooh, possibly less hangover too)! We’ve been and it really is quite something; we urge you to check it out, you won’t be disappointed. It’s an asset not only to Daventry, but the whole of Northamptonshire!
