Lighting up Christmas – a list of confirmed organised “switching on” events across Northants
There are numerous Northamptonshire High Streets that are 3-2-1 ready for the “BIG” switch on. Which ones will you be wrapping up for (on the promise of a Hot Toddy to warm you back up)? We’ll be adding to this list as soon as details become available…
WHEN: Sat 25 November
TIME: 12:00 am – 5:00 pm
WHAT ELSE: Lantern Workshops for the Christmas Parade Saturday 25th November with the switching on of the Christmas Lights from the High Street to the Market Place. Workshops take place Saturday 11 & 18 and Sunday 19 November from 10.00am- 12.00pm & 2.00pm – 4.00pm on all days in the Old Fire Station Community Room.
WHEN: Market Square, Higham Ferrers, Sat 18 November
TIME: 11am – 6pm
WHAT ELSE: This is the infamous Christmas Sparkle event – The Continental Market in College Street, Father Christmas in Chichele College’s Winter Wonderland, street entertainment for adults and childrens; face painting at Wilson Browne’s offices – means there will be loads going on for everyone to enjoy. Mulled Wine and Refreshments on the Market Square and in the Bede House, and of course, Christmas crafts and gifts to buy all over the town.
WHEN: Market Square, Sat 18 November
TIME: 6pm (TBC)
WHAT ELSE: Expect flurrys of snow on a magical journey through the town centre Lapland as the town celebrate s Christmas throughout November and December. From lively entertainment and an igloo cinema, to a craft market and delicious food stalls, we’re promised lots to see and do once the switch is flicked. Bring it on.
TIME: 5 – 7.30pm
WHAT ELSE: Kettering’s countdown to Christmas will start when comedian James Acaster turns on the town’s lights at the BIG Switch On event. The Kettering-born comedian will take to the stage accompanied by hosts Connect FM and will feature the cast of the Lighthouse Theatre’s Christmas panto, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, plus live music and entertainment for the whole family. The stand-up comedian has become a regular on TV panel shows such as Mock the Week and 8 out of 10 cats and has received acclaim from around the world, including a record breaking five consecutive nominations for best comedy
WHEN: High St, Sat 3 December
TIME: From 10am – 4pm
WHAT ELSE: Traders dressed in Victorian clothes will pack Olney’s Market Place and High Street with stalls offering treats for your festive table and under the tree. Everything from an array of gifts, holly wreaths and wrapping to handmade crafts. Sample delicious mulled wine, hot chocolate and turkey rolls as well as other tasty food and drink on the day. The Farmers market offers delicious local produce.
WHEN: Sat 3 December
TIME: 12 – 7pm
WHAT ELSE: Where better to experience a festive and fun-filled Christmas Market this winter than in the beautiful, historic town of Oundle? Starting at 12 noon on Saturday 3 December the fun will last all afternoon until 7pm. Join in with all the fun and switching the lights on at 5:30pm. Masses of mulled wine and mince pies and other street food delicacies will keep you warm. With the town’s fabulous independent shops and cafes there is plenty of opportunity to relax, soak up the atmosphere and to find that ‘perfect’ gift.
WHEN: Sat 25 November
TIME: 2.15 – 5.15pm
WHAT ELSE: There will be stalls along the High Street, fairground rides, live raindeer, food, refreshments and best of all the community of Rushden getting together to watch the towns beautiful Christmas lights being switched on. This promises to be a great family event that everyone will enjoy, so come down to Rushden this November 2017.

WHAT ELSE: There will be fairground rides, side stalls, a live music stage, seasonal street food and hog roast from local traders, street acts, character appearances, face painting, and of course, Meet & Greet Santa himself before we call on everyone to help ‘Light up Thrapston’ and switch on our Christmas lights.
WHEN: Sat, 25 November
TIME: 13:30 – 18:15
WHAT ELSE: Probably me with mulled wine in hand and a bit of snazzy tinsel round my hair : )
The fun begins at 1pm where reindeer await company and queues start to form for the extremely popular snow globe. Music organised by All Hallows Church choir fills the air while Steve the juggler does a walkabout to entertain crowds by juggling, spinning, doing balancing tricks and more. He might even let you have a go!Have a glass of mulled wine and browse amongst the Christmas Market stalls to see what catches your fancy. Browse amongst the stalls at the Victorian Market located at The Hind to see what catches your fancy with a warming glass of mulled wine. Perhaps you could wind your way to the Market Square to have a taster of the Christmas Market there! Line the streets at 3.45pm for the parade along with the cast of The Wizard of Oz to welcome Santa on his sleigh pulled by his favourite reindeer. Will Dorothy be accompanying Santa? Will Toto be flanking the sleigh? You’ll find out on the day. Vivacious duo, Liz and Mark from Connect FM, are back! They start the countdown with an exciting stage performance at 4pm consisting of local performers, headline tribute acts (TBC) and the cast of the Wizard of Oz for some pantomime fun to enhance the merry mood. Win prizes donated by local businesses including free tickets for The Castle Theatre’s Christmas pantomime, The Wizard of Oz.
The grand finale is at 6.15pm. Watch the town lit by fireworks and the Christmas Lights to mark the start of the Christmas period.

The display switch on event is Sat 2 December 7pm and on 4pm to 10pm daily until 31 December.
