Owner of Food For Thought Kerry Lees felt compelled to open a zero waste store after becoming parent put the climate crisis into sharp focus. It was her way of making a contribution to change, cutting pollution and reducing landfill and we reckon she is absolutely nailing it. This eco-emporium in Wellingborough’s Nene Court is all about promoting and providing access to sustainable living for the local community, selling a huge range of fresh produce, cupboard staples, toiletries, homewares and kids crafts.

Tiny but mighty, this zero waste refill and coffee shop in Flore has a huge range of plastic free treasures from kitchen cupboard essentials and eco-friendly cleaning products, to sweets, snacks and toiletries. You can order online for click and collect too, so there’s no need to faff around weighing things if you’re in a rush. You can enjoy Yellow Bourbon coffee and cakes from The Good Loaf here too and, if you bring your own keep cup, they’ll even do you a takeaway. Fresh bread and pastries are delivered on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Daily Bread is a workers’ co-operative that’s been running in Northampton for over 40 years . These guys are absolute pros when it comes to ethical retail, selling wholefoods and prioritising their workers and environmental impact over profit. They also donate a portion of their profits to local community groups and developing countries. The focus at Daily Bread is on Fair Trade and organic products, offering local produce wherever possible. It’s not strictly a refill store but there is certainly an emphasis on low waste packaging and ethically sourced products.

This gorgeous little shop at The Yards in Kettering is an absolute vibe but, if you can’t get to the shops, Refill Van will come to your door – there’s a weekly delivery route to keep emissions low that goes via Northampton, Kettering and Wellingborough. We love the fact that you don’t have to cart all your refillable containers to the shops too. Owners Emma and Tarn stock everything a girl needs from store cupboard essentials to refillable, plastic-free home, health & beauty products.​

Green Machine, Towcester

To paraphrase Greta, no one is too small to make a difference and Green Machine is a real passion project. Prompted by Lockdown, owner Ann Clare decided to make the leap from her career as an automotive engineer to launch a business she felt proud of. Ann can often be seen pootling around the towns and villages of South Northants and, lucky for me, she even stops outside my house. Plastic free products delivered to your doorstep reduces the effort you have to make to find a zero-waste shop and cuts carbon emissions. Winner winner vegan dinner.

    What about Refill Revolution in Oundle? At Oundle Warf, stacked with essentials, herbs, spices. And on Tuesday and Friday you can collect fresh organic milk in your refillable bottle from the ProOrganic milk van!
