10 fab and free things to do this month

Great intentions but small bank balance this month? We've got your back with a fresh pick of ideas for a day out with mates, family or solo - from art and artefacts to spring walks and chatting books with a glass of wine.

GET CULTURED

Northampton Museum and Art Gallery

Northampton Museum and Art Gallery is one of our favourite local hangouts and it’s FOC. Even better. What’s so great about it? Shoes, peeps, shoes. The museum boasts the largest collections of shoes and shoe heritage in the world, representing Northamptonshire’s historic shoe industry. What more could a girl want? There are more shoes here than in Carrie Bradshaw’s closet: a whopping 15,000 plus loads more historic collections, modern art and a fab cafe and shop.

Just up the road, head to Abington Park Museum, set in a beautiful former manor house in the middle of Abington Park. It’s a great place to find out about local history and culture with free entry.

WELLBEING

Delapré Abbey in Northampton are running a four day Wellbeing Festival this month, as part of their brilliant new Wellbeing Program with informal talks, classes and performances designed to boost your health and va-va-voom in the beautiful abbey grounds. You can choose which events you’d like to attend and the best thing? It’s free to attend. There’s pilates, soul fusion, bootcamp, yoga, core de force, seated exercise, children’s sports activities, and zumba, plus talks on managing your mental health, advice on how to stop smoking, and healthy eating on a budget, as well as African drumming performances.

BOOKISH FUN

Delapre Abbey Book Club What's On Northants March

Bookworms unite! Kettering wine and book club are super welcoming and they meet on the last Wednesday of every month at the Wayfarers pub. This month’s read is Outlawed by Anna North, there’s still time to read it before the meet-up on 27 April so get cracking. Borrow the book from the library and you just have to fork out for a spritzer or two in the pub. There’s also a monthly women’s book club at the wonderful Saints Coffee on St. Giles’ in Northampton, meeting on the third Thursday of the month. This month it lands on 21 April and the book is The Water Dancer by Ta-Nahisi Coates but if you can’t read it in time ease yourself in to May’s pick, Down the Rabbit Hole by Juan Pablo Villalobos.

Delapré Abbey in Northampton are running a range of wellbeing events and activities, including the fantastic Comfort Book Club, focusing each week on a different chapter of Matt Haig’s The Comfort Book, with the aim of helping readers to feel more empowered. Mondays from 10-11am until 23 May.

FIT AND FRESH

If you love walking and exploring the county, Northamptonshire Walks run numerous group walks that are free to join but must be booked in advance. There are lots of lovely walks coming up this month including The Bramptons, Silverstone and Badby (perfect for bluebells).

BLOOMIN’ MARVELOUS

It’s officially Peak Bluebell in April, so head to one of the many glorious spots on Northants to bask in the sight and scent while it lasts, from Everdon Stubbs to Badby Woods, check out our favourite local bluebell spots here.

The gardens at Northampton’s Delapre Abbey are entirely free to enjoy and they’re pretty splendid, as well as being within walking distance of the town centre (worth noting that it’s free to park here too). The walled garden is particularly lovely for beautiful blooms and sculpture. There’s a fee to enter the fantastic Abbey, but kids go free.
