Halloween's around the corner and soon your little ghouls will be off school for endless days. But fear not, Northants is bursting with fun activities and things to do to keep the kids happy this half term. It'll be a scream. Mwahahahaha!

Warts and All Theatre’s Holiday Club, Delapré Abbey

The Ministry of Monsters kicks of at Delapré for 5 days of freaky fun from 25-29 Oct. The Mudlets will get the chance to solve a spooky mystery, learn the art of storytelling, get handy with outdoor crafts and have a go at pumpkin carving.

Halloween Fun, Rockingham Castle

With more that a millennium of history, you’re bound to encounter the odd ghostly resident at Rockingham. Take a spooky tour of the castle, led by the in-house witches and wizards, and have a go at the ghastly ghost walk around the gardens, try your hand a spot of pumpkin rolling, then put some colour back in your cheeks with a Wizard’s Afternoon Tea. Shall I be Mummy. Geddit…? Mummy…?

Halloween Horrors at Delapré Abbey

Head to Delapré with blankets and flasks of hot chocolate in tow for two wicked outdoor screenings of ’90s classic Hocus Pocus (PG). There’s also spooky films in the Abbey cellar and a pumpkin trail in the grounds.

If you’re brave enough, then venture to Evenley Wood from 25-31 Oct for a Halloween Spooktacular trail around the woods and throw your witches hat in to the fairy ring (or post your pic on instagram) for a chance to win their fancy dress competition.

There’s lots of Halloween fun planned at The Reading Tree bookshop in Weedon for half term week 23-31 Oct, Including spooky story times, treasure hunts, arts and crafts.

Shrek The Musical, Royal and Derngate

And if you’re still seeking some troll action after all that lot, Shrek The Musical is on stage at the R&D from 26-30 Oct, performed by the brilliant Northampton Musical Theatre Company and a proper feel-good production for all ages.

Pumpkin Patches

Pumpkin season’s in full swing and there are patches aplenty to take your pick from around the county. Head to Saxby’s in Farndish for PYO from 16-31 Oct. The cidery bar will be open for the grown-ups and there’ll be an apple launching trebuchet to fire apples at pumpkin targets. Could get messy. Wappenham Farm have PYO pumpkins and a Halloween trail. Book daytime tickets or go along in the evening for an extra spooky experience, when you can also enjoy evening meals – saves on cooking: we’re sold. Welford Christmas Tree Farm have pumpkin picking, a spooky pumpkin hunt and a tipi cafe serving drinks and cakes, Overstone Grange have more than 30 varieties of gourds, a spooky trail and refreshments and Forge Coffee in Culworth will hold an evening of pumpkin carving on 31 Oct.

If you’re starting to feel a bit spooked out, take the kids and teens to Rushden Lakes for one (or all!) of these fantastic activities to burn off some of that small person energy: 360 Play is an indoor soft play centre where the tiddlers can scramble around safely while you relax enjoy a coffee (that’s how it works, right?); Paradise Island Adventure Golf has two 19 hole golf courses set in a tropical island paradise with a maze of obstacles to overcome; and Rock Up is an indoor climbing centre with a stonking 26 fun climbing walls to scale suitable for kids age 4 and up. Plus there’s always the Nene Wetlands Nature Reserve, with picturesque walks around the lake and sculpture trails to explore. There’s enough here to keen them entertained for the whole week.
