Muddy reviews: Ice Trak and Lap of Lights at Silverstone Circuit

Rev your engines and don your leg warmers for a feel-good journey around the world with all the cosy ski-lodge vibes at this fabulous feista of Christmassy joy at Silverstone Circuit.

The Lodge silverstone

Silverstone have upped their festive game by a country mile this year after the whopping success of last year’s brilliantly Covid-safe, in-car light trail. The Lap of Lights (officially opened by Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Driver Anthony Davidson roaring around the track to the delight of my F1 obsessed youngest daughter) is back with a magical journey around the circuit and gasp-worthy light displays celebrating Santa’s journey on Christmas Eve as he travels through the different continents. You’ll even get to see the big beardy man himself, which I think I was even more excited about than my 12 year old (pogonophile over here). You can expect to be dazzled by 400,000 individual fire lights and 440 laser beams powerful enough to hit the moon lighting up the race track, visible for miles and pretty spectacular.

LAP OF LIGHTS SILVERSTONE

But there’s more more more this year too, with the immense Wing building (the one that looks like a gigantic warped F1 car) having been transformed into The Lodge a vast food, drink and entertainment venue, which includes – drumroll please – an ice rink in the Pit Lane, axe-throwing (yes, watch out husband), curling, a cosy cinema area for the kids and live music.

We decided that food and drink were our top priority on arrival (naturally). There’s a cavernous amount of space here, it feels a bit like one of those immense mountain top restaurants in ski resorts, and you can order at the bar but, even better, you can just sit at your table and order using the QR code, which is what we did. It was so straightforward and hassle free and even better when your food and drinks magically appear at the table. We fuelled ourselves with thick hot chocolates, bbq ribs, dirty dogs and cheesy chips, but if you’re not healthy eaters like us (lolz) there is plenty of choice.

ICE TRAK SILVERSTONE

Reinvigorated and ready for action, we made our way to the Ice Trak, which curves around the circuit’s iconic pit lane, overlooked by a cosy cafe (handy for a sit down and a coffee if you’re not all skaters) and surrounded by real Christmas trees lit up with fairy lights and the odd Ferrari thrown in for good measure. The staff were lovely, it didn’t feel crowded and, critically, the boots were comfy and we took to the ice with glee, channelling Jayne Torvill, obvs.

LAP OF LIGHTS

Then it was time to zoom off for a spin around the other track on four wheels, as we headed for the Lap of Lights to round off a spectacularly memorable evening. Pro tip: the Lap of Lights takes around 45 minutes but at busy times you’ll be queueing to get to the start point, so leave enough time to relax and make the most of all the entertainments at The Lodge and Ice Trak too, we were here around 3 hours altogether but could easily have spent longer.

Lap of Lights, Ice Trak and The Lodge are at Silverstone Circuit, Towcester
Northamptonshire, NN12 8TN until 3 Jan.
From £30 per vehicle.

Went on Friday evening to the Lap of lights. What an amazing experience! It is certainly worth a visit; I went with my son and 10 year old Grandson and all of us thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Never a dull moment and a real treat for the entire family. Will certainly be going back. Your summary of the whole experience is spot on!
