Where to pick your own in Northants

Grab your straw hat and wicker basket: it's summer in England, which means it's time to PYO. From sumptuous strawberries to green veg to blooming bouquets, here's where to pick 'em.

Somehow, despite the juice stains and paying-to-do-manual-labour, picking one’s own fruit / flowers / veg is unassailably charming. So dust off the broad-brimmed straw hats, grab the children and head to the fields.

We love a bit of wholesome rural fun here at Muddy and — as luck would have it — there are a fair few PYO farms to choose from. Time to break out your inner Milly-Molly-Mandy, clear out some fridge space, and pick some darned delicious in-season fruit. (Just remember to save a punnet to settle down and watch some fabulous tennis – essential sofa snacks for that true Wimbledon experience.)

Grange Farm, Harpole

Grange Farm offers fab selection of freshly grown fruit throughout the summer months, including strawbs, razzers, gooseberries, blackberries and asparagus. The strawberries are conveniently grown in raised planters that stretch across the fields as far as the eye can see, meaning no bending down necessary. Win. No need to book – just turn up and pick! There’s a wee shop here too, selling teas, coffees, cakes and ice creams.

Wappenham Farm, Wappenham

This working farm in south Northants has a fab maize maze and PYO sunflower patch open from 20 August. There’s also a straw bale stack for intrepid climbers, pop-up cafe and plenty of cute farm animals to feed too,.

Dovecote Buttery, Geddington

A family run restaurant, farm shop and PYO fruit farm with succulent strawberries just waiting to be gorged on. Check social media for opening times as they’ll depend on crop availability.

Overstone Grange, Overstone

The glorious yellow sunflower field is set to open in August, with fun things to spot along the way to keep those smaller legs running and you can pick sunflowers to take home at an additional cost. There are also refreshments available to buy, tables to sit at and a tent for shelter, plus a play patch with bale towers and sandpits.

Pink Welly Posies, Waites Farm, Eastcote

Florist and flower farmer Becky, of Pink Welly Posies, regularly holds Pick Your Own Bouquet events. You’ll get a tour of the flower patch and the chance to pick and arrange your own bouquet with Becky’s expert tuition. Tea and biccies included. Advance booking is essential, check social media for dates.

HAVE CHARMING BASKET, WILL TRAVEL

Hill Farm, Chesterton, Warks

Open from June-October offering both PYO and ready picked soft fruit and veg so, once you’ve stuffed in as much as you can, get your pinny on and get making jam, chutney and wine. Set in gorgeous rural surroundings, the farm also offers light refreshments and a kids playground.

Lillingstone PYO, Lillingstone Dayrell, Bucks

A family run farm nestled in the Bucks countryside just a hop across the Northants border, there’s PYO strawbs, a maize maze, sunflower patch and honey produced on the farm for sale too. Yum.

Rutland Water Fruit Farm, Rutland

This tiny family-run fruit farm (four acres to be precise) offers juicy strawberries and raspberries all summer long but because they’re small they often run out quite quickly so if you’re local, pop your head in to see what they’re offering and you may just get lucky. Oh, and dig this, they grow great spuds here too (not for picking obvs!) but there’s always heaps to choose from.

Malt Kiln Farm Shop, Rugby, Warks

Based just on the edge of Rugby the Malt Kiln is worth the trip if you’re looking for a bit more than just your standard strawberry picking fare. Here you’ll find raspberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants, gooseberries, rhubarb, courgettes, broad beans and even marrows (god knows what you’ll do with them, but YES you can pick some!) Strawberry picking is also undercover so you can even go when it rains. (Rain? in England? In summer?).

Red Road Garden Centre and PYO Farm, Kineton, Warks

This cutesy garden centre is in a gorgeous location and has strawberry, blackcurrant, redcurrant and raspberry picking galore. There’s tayberries too (a cross between a blackberry and a red raspberry – no I didn’t know what it was either). You’ll find rows upon rows heaving with fresh fruit just waiting to be picked, and once you’ve finished there’s a well-stocked garden centre to treat yourself to some new plants.

Lodge Farm Sunflowers, Kineton, Warks

A late summer burst of colour for your table, PYO flowers is a lovely idea, and even better, Lodge Farm Sunflowers give all the money to charity. Stems from this field cost 50p each with money dropped into an honesty box and going to Shipston Home Nursing. Keep an eye on their socials to see when the flowers are ripe for the picking.
