Things to do this weekend

Fri 2 - Sun 4 November

THEATRE: The Royal and Derngate, Northampton, Fri 2 Nov

Adapted from the family favourite author Michael Morpurgo’s tear-jerking book, Private Peaceful promises to be an uplifting story for the whole Muddy Squad. (Yes you can even drag the teenagers to this one). As a commemoration for the 100th anniversary of WW1, the production promises to blend entertainment, a bit of education and of course excitement. Tickets can be bought through their website.

FILM: Northampton Filmhouse, off Derngate, Northampton, various showtimes Fri 2 – Sat 3 Nov

This cosy, plush cinema is showing fab films this November, perfect for a trip en famille or just with the girls. A Star is Born is sure to be one of the biggest movies released. (Lady Gaga is beyond brill!) If you’re wanting something a little more serious, tune into the Hate U Give, a powerful and thought-provoking take on violence and high school shootings in America. Book online through their website or visit the Derngate Box Office.

COOKERY & FOOD: Bay Tree Cottage Cookery Workshops, Maidford, Towcester, running throughout Nov

Inspired by bakeoff and those incred cakes? Well, you’ll be baking like Mary Berry after improving your culinary skills at one of these Bay Tree cookery workshops. Ranging from ‘A Winter Afternoon Tea’, to a ‘Gluten Free Christmas’ or even ‘Vegan Workshops’, the sessions run either all day, for half a day or just one evening if you’re super busy rushing around for the Mudlets. Visit the website for more info and to purchase a ticket.

KIDS: Fireworks Spectacular at Wicksteed Park, Kettering, Sat 3 Nov

Why not visit the theme park in the day, whiz around on the dodgems or try the high wires (I personally prefer to perch on the carousel) before treating the Mudlets to the Bonfire and Firework evening from 5pm? Get your diary organised pronto as tickets are £4 until 29th October and £5 on the night. You can even get your groove on at the free disco in the Pavillion after the display- I’m certainly sensing some shameless dad-dancing. A full listing of other fireworks and bonfire events can be found here.

EXHIBITION: Sarah Taylor Silverwood, Crowd Show Exhibition, Contemporary Art Northampton, Guildhall Road, Sat 3 Nov

Crowd Show is an exhibition at NN contemporary, which is creative, cool and captivating, with Sarah’s work reminiscent of the Banks vibe we all crave, but no shredded paintings this time I promise. Drop into this free event from 2pm-5pm where she will lead the discussion on the social and political changes in Northampton, drawing up a mock ‘constitution’ for the future of our beloved town. Following this event there will be a closing party at the museum, an apt way to end her exhibition period that started in early September.

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING: The Brampton Halt Christmas Fayre, 1am-4pm, Pitsford Road, Chapel Brampton, Sat 3 – Sun 4 Nov

This fayre has an array of local products & produce up for sale, which will defo help you along with your Christmas shopping and stocking fillers. There will also be lots of variety from cards to candles, jewellery to soap. The marquee bar will be serving mulled wine & Christmas cocktails throughout the duration of the fayre- it’s boozy and brilliant. The BBQ brings an added bonus, dishing up hog roast & bratwurst… We are feeling festive already! Entry is free, with donations going to the mighty Magnus medicine fund. More info can be found in this link.
