Half Term Fun…

Has there ever been a better combination than romance and bored children?  This week’s What’s On deals with the paradox of Valentines Day and half term hitting us like a Perfect Storm.  Put another way, perfect Mums and Dads, should get, nay DESERVE, a bit of fun time after days of distracting the little ‘uns. Allow us to show you how…

The Soul Weekender, Stanwick Hotel, 10-12th February

Also available in glorious technicolour

Hands up who know’s the roots of Northern Soul?  It is and was a music and dance movement that emerged in Northern England in the late 1960s from the British mod scene as a particular style of black American soul music based on the heavy beat and fast tempo of the mid-1960s Tamla Motown sound.  So we thank Wigan, not Detroit for the good times in Stanwick this coming week. Three days of Soul! Two rooms! Playing Northern Soul, Funk, Modern & Rare Soul & featuring some of the UK’s finest Soul DJ’s! Boy do I fancy this event. The first I’d heard of it were some passionate 50 something, Soul types walking their dog around Summer Leys in Doddington. See it’s for people like us, and Stanwick Hotel are offering some great room rates to boot. Tickets: Friday (£7), Saturday (£10), Sunday (£5) or the whole weekend for £20.

Fawlty Towers Dining experience, Deco Theatre, 7.30pm, 10 February

You get the picture

OK, this is very silly, but it’s also very funny. Join this version of Basil, Sybil and Manuel for a dinner event of the year which combines fine food and classic comedy action. Chaos and mayhem are served in large portions and very likely to interrupt the proceedings, but all should end well, as the staff of hotel and catering management do everything they can to keep the evening on course!  Expect a big fun night out in a friendly party atmosphere with some of the finest comedy actors in the land, professionally produced to the highest standards and with your enjoyment always at the top of the menu. A faultless show that guarantees to reach chuckle muscles you never knew you had! Then dancing until Midnight. Tickets £34.955 pp.

The Twits, Royal & Derngate, 2.30pm & 7pm, 14-18 February

They seem nice

The hard part for me will distinguishing between the stage-show and members of my own family. Mr. Twit was a twit. He was born a twit. And, now at the age of 60, he was a bigger twit than ever. Mr Twit has a very hairy face. His beard is spiky and smelly. It also contains cornflakes, sardines and even some stilton. Mrs Twit is equally as foul and she hates Mr Twit just as much as Mr Twit hates her. The Twits really are the most spiteful and revolting couple you could ever hope to meet. They spend their days playing wicked tricks on each other and mistreating Muggle-Wump monkeys. They also have a particularly sticky trick to catch Roly-Poly birds for their bird pies. But not for much longer because the monkeys have a cunning plan to teach those terrible twits a lesson. Directed by Max Webster (The Lorax at The Old Vic), this mischievous new show promises to be just as disgusting and repulsive as earthworms disguised as spaghetti – the perfect treat for all the family. Recommended for Children aged over 6 years old. Tickets £17.

So you think you know about Dinsoaurs, Lighthouse Theatre 2pm, 16 February

So do your Kids think they know about Dinosaurs?! Did dinosaurs eat their own families? Was every Tyrannosaur a fearsome carnivore? Why did Allosaurus headbutt its prey to death?  How about this for a great half term activity as kids (and parents) can come and test your knowledge against BEN GARROD (THE TV SCIENTIST IN ‘ATTENBOROUGH AND THE GIANT DINOSAUR‘). With the help of TV film footage and photos of his own palaeontological dinosaur digs, he will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about dinosaurs – and more. This is an interactive show where children will be given the chance to ask questions and show off their dinosaur knowledge to the audience. Ben’s assistant will roam the auditorium with a microphone and take questions from as many children as possible. Using film footage from the BBC’s ‘Planet Dinosaur’, Ben will talk about the deadliest predators that ever roamed the planet and the ones that 65 million years ago, would have walked right where they are sitting now.
