It’s a vintage What’s on until 16 March

I’m a vintage chick, I admit it. Give me those 50’s lipsticks, and a retro seat on which to park my Muddy posterior, charge me a vintage champagne in antique crystal glasses and you’ll have friend for life.  There’s lots going on in the county this week, but theres also a definite nod to the good old glamourous days.

Starlight presents – Never Ending Story; The  Ballet – Light house Theatre, 7.30pm, Sunday, March 12th

Not only is this vintage but it’s also a classic in our house.  In fact – I loved this film and now it’s a Northamptonshire ballet.   Join Starlight Dance & Musical Theatre School as they present this ballet adaptation of the classic ‘THE NEVERENDING STORY’ Bastian is a young boy who lives a dreary life after his mother passed away, being tormented by school bullies. On one such occasion he escapes into a book shop where the old proprietor reveals an ancient story-book to him, which he is warned can be dangerous. I know, it’s edge of the seat stuff.  I know the answers! and I’m still beside myself!!!  Tickets from £10 – £12.

Vintage Spring Fair hosted by One Fat Hen – Sunday 12 March

I dont care if it’s cool – who made this vintage mess?

I love to Lovejoy as Tina Charles nearly sang.  But I wouldn’t complain if an Ian McShane type vintage antique dealer tipped me the wink when I visit the Memorial Hall in the beautiful village of Yardley Hastings to pick up a bargain. This Fair brings a wealth of carefully chosen vintage sellers from across the region selling kitchenware, gardenalia, furniture plus a delight of vintage smalls. Perhaps a quick celebratory half at the lovely Rose and Crown Bistro afterwards?

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra: Raphael Wallfisch Performs Elgar’s Cello Concerto, Royal & Derngate, 7.30pm, 12 March

They may be tiny, but this Orchestra is an auditory powerhouse

Classical Music can be daunting to many of us, but treat yourself to an evening with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and you’ll never look back.  Tonight they will delve into pure orchestral emotion, beginning with Wagner’s Prelude to Act 1 from his Romantic opera Lohengrin. This piece is framed by shimmering violins that evoke a delicate loveliness to match the fairy-tale element to the opera. Cellist Raphael Wallfisch takes centre stage for a performance of Elgar’s rich and noble masterpiece, his Cello Concerto. Considered to be the last great flowering of Elgar’s genius, the Concerto sweeps with melodic, autumnal beauty and remains one of the best examples of English music to date. Closing the concert will be Beethoven’s stirring Symphony No.7; a wonderful blend of orchestral gravitas and swelling tunes which is used to great effect in the film The King’s Speech. The Royal and Derngate also welcome back BBC Radio Northampton’s John Griff as the host of their hugely popular free pre-concert talks. It will take place at 6.30pm in the auditorium prior to the evening’s performance.  Tickets £5 – £35.

Shrek: The Musical, Royal and Derngate, Wednesday, 14-25 March

Looking good my Ogre-ish friend

Oh, now we cannot miss. The original movie hit our screens in 2001 – can you believe.  I guess that keeps the vintage theme going. Following a record-breaking UK and Ireland Tour, the smash hit blockbuster is back – and larger than life! Based on the story and characters from the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, this hilarious and spectacular production turns the world of fairytales upside down in an all-singing, all-dancing, must-see musical comedy. Join Shrek, our unlikely hero, and his loyal steed Donkey as they set off on a quest to rescue the beautiful (if slightly temperamental) Princess Fiona from her tower, guarded by a fire-breathing, love-sick dragon. Add the vertically challenged Lord Farquaad, a gang of fairytale misfits, and a biscuit with attitude and you’ve got an irresistible mix of adventure, laughter and romance, guaranteed to delight audiences of all ages. There are various showtimes across the run, varying by day 1pm, 2.30pm, 5pm and 7.30pm. Tickets £16 – £49.50*
