Keep on Running Mate
You might think running isn't for you... but if it's only the thought of staying motivated that's the problem - think again, Mr Muddy Stilettos has the solution!
When Ms Muddy challenged me to couch to 5k I must admit I wasn’t enamoured with the prospect of plugging into an app on my phone, and running by myself to undo the decadence that I’ve allowed myself over the past 30 years. I’m 46 years old, technically obese and love a glass of Malbec or whisky (it depends whose round it is).
Some of those factors haven’t changed since I made the decision to pay my £2 for each Running Mate session I attend, but oh my word I feel great. Within 10 weeks of starting the programme I can run a 5k (or run at least for 30 mins) where I would have been out of breath running for a bus only a few weeks ago. I’ll never look back now. I found something I love to do, with people I look forward to seeing every week.
Running Mate is the brainchild of Susan Harrision, and is a running club for everyone looking to start the road to fitness or at least stay on the path. Susan and her very able team run 45 minute classes across Daventry, Grange Park (Northampton), Towcester and Wellingborough, offering weekday (usually evening) sessions for beginners or “improvers”.
So here is the deal. New starters like me, turn up to the sessions, handover a couple of quid, and then over the ten weeks we follow a walk/run programme with the encouragement of Susan and her team – Melissa, Hayley, Nick and Payton who accompany us all the way. It’s that simple! I promised myself a piece of running gear every two weeks as an incentive stick with it – but actually the real incentive is how good you feel after a run, and what I really look forward to is meeting my running mates and setting out on a run after work.
One of the special aspects for me, is that rather than head off into the distance, Running Mates loop back after the interval finishes to encourage us all to keep running together – so no matter your pace, the group sticks together in solidarity. Power to the people!
I’ve just come to the end of my ten week beginners period, and I’ve lost half a stone. I’ve chosen to eat better so that it improves my running/jogging, and mentally I feel fresh. Of course Muddy Stilettos offsets some of the self imposed healthy eating, as many of our trips out to see the great and the good in Northamptonshire involve delicious food and drink. But what better than a balanced life and a feeling of bon ami amongst new friends. Keep Running Mate.
The next beginners running courses start in September. Each session is £2 per person. The Daventry course starts on Monday 4 September, with Wellingborough and Towcester courses starting from Monday 18 September, and the Northampton course starting on Tuesday 19 September.
